Polish umowa o dzieło in 2026: net pay and 20% or 50% costs

Tax costs can change withholding under a Polish specific-work contract, but they are not a freely chosen discount. This guide shows ordinary costs and qualifying copyright remuneration, alongside situations deliberately outside the calculator’s scope.

Simple Tools editorial teamReviewed: 30 September 2026

First confirm contract classification and scope

A specific-work contract concerns a defined result; the document’s name alone does not establish correct classification. An ordinary umowa o dzieło outside own-employer work generally does not create ZUS contributions. Work for your own employer is an important exception that this calculator does not support.

Prepare one gross amount and documentation supporting tax costs. Confirm the domestic business payer, Polish residence and absence of other benefits or deductions. No contributions does not mean no reporting duties, including possible RUD reporting. The tool does not register the contract or establish health-insurance coverage.

Ordinary 20% costs and the advance: an example

For PLN 5,000 gross without ZUS, ordinary costs are PLN 1,000. The advance base is PLN 4,000; at 12% without PIT-2, tax is PLN 480 and net pay PLN 4,520.00. Costs reduce the taxable base, not contractual gross remuneration: do not subtract them again from the payment.

The calculator rounds the base and advance to whole PLN. With fractional amounts, order matters. For PLN 5,000.63 gross, 20% costs are PLN 1,000.13, the rounded base PLN 4,001, PIT PLN 480 and net PLN 4,520.63. Compare the components, not just the final result.

When 50% costs can be selected in this model

50% costs require qualifying copyright remuneration and documentation supporting the relevant rights and eligible activity. Creative work or the contract’s title alone is insufficient. This scenario only covers an entirely qualifying payment; mixed ordinary and copyright remuneration is not automatically split.

For an entirely qualifying PLN 5,000 remuneration with an unused cap, costs are PLN 2,500, the base PLN 2,500, PIT PLN 300 and net PLN 4,700.00. This illustrates the formula, not eligibility of your own remuneration. Confirm legal qualification and documentation with the payer.

Remaining copyright cap and no substitute 20% costs

The shared annual copyright-cost cap is PLN 120,000. Prepare the used portion across relevant sources and account for exempt income reducing the shared cap. Do not enter costs from just one contract if other qualifying payments affect the remaining allowance.

If PLN 119,900 is already used, PLN 100 remains. For PLN 5,000 remuneration the model allows only PLN 100 costs: base PLN 4,900, PIT PLN 588, net PLN 4,412.00. With the cap fully exhausted, costs are zero and net PLN 4,400.00. Costs above the cap are not replaced with a 20% deduction.

PIT-2, higher advances and contracts up to PLN 200

Select PLN 0, 100, 150 or 300 reduction according to the declaration accepted for this month. Do not reuse it on a second payment. The 32% rate represents a requested higher advance, not automatic annual-threshold assessment. Being under 26 does not itself give youth relief on an umowa o dzieło.

A confirmed whole qualifying contract with a specified amount up to PLN 200 has a separate 12% gross-revenue lump-sum mode, without costs or PIT-2. At PLN 200, tax is PLN 24 and net PLN 176.00. Do not apply this mode to a partial payment of larger remuneration or select it merely because today’s payment is small.

Checklist before comparing the payment

Compare gross remuneration, cost mode, copyright confirmation, remaining cap and accepted PIT-2. Read the base and tax separately. Annual settlement can produce a different final liability from the sum of advances; the calculator does not combine all income sources or prepare a tax return.

Do not compare specific-work and mandate contracts by changing the label alone: the result, contractual conditions and insurance treatment differ. For a discrepancy return to the documents and payer. Entered amounts are processed locally, not stored in the URL, persistent storage or analytics; copying and printing are deliberate choices.

Frequently asked questions

Does every specific-work contract qualify for 50% costs?

No. Qualifying copyright remuneration, eligible activity and supporting documentation are needed. The contract’s title is insufficient to select this scenario.

Can I switch to 20% costs after exhausting the 50% cap?

Not for the same qualifying payment in this model. Costs are limited to the remaining cap, without a substitute 20% deduction on the excess.

Is a student under 26 exempt from PIT on specific-work pay?

Not under youth relief: umowa o dzieło is outside that exemption. Student status does not change the ordinary withholding formula in this calculator.

Does no ZUS mean there are no reporting duties?

No. Reporting duties, including possible RUD, can still apply. The calculator neither registers the contract nor assesses its classification or insurance coverage.

Official sources and scope

This guide covers one 2026 payment to a Polish resident from a domestic business payer. Work for your own employer, B2B, PPK, benefits in kind and other deductions are excluded. Contract classification and insurance status are not determined here. Confirm the scenario and documents with the payer; this is not legal advice or an annual PIT return.
